Insights on Haiti

Despite other pressures in recent days Council members have been keeping a watchful eye on Haiti’s run-off presidential elections, which took place on Sunday, 20 March. The voting went relatively smoothly and preliminary election results are expected on 31 March with full results due 16 April.

Some members think a formal statement may be useful once the official results are out. Following a number of controversial elections in the last few years most Council members seem convinced that a statement this week will be premature.

Haiti is expected to be a key issue on the Council’s agenda in April under Colombia’s presidency with a high level Council meeting. It may be that any Council response to the election results will get wrapped into that event.
