Insights on Sudan

The Council will have a closed meeting this afternoon on Sudan. A representative from the South Sudan government and the Sudanese permanent representative to the UN will be invited to participate. Atul Khare, the Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, will also brief the Council on the situaiton in Abyei and south Sudan.

Among the key issues likely to be discussed at the meeting this afternoon are the deterioration of the situation in Abyei and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement’s (SPLM) concerns about the dialogue with Khartoum. The SPLM has accused Khartoum of supporting and arming militias in south Sudan.
