Insights on the Iran Sanctions Committee

Tomorrow afternoon, Colombian Ambassador Nestor Osorio, will brief Council members for the first time as the chair of the 1737 Committee on Iran. He is expected to report on the work of the sanctions committee including the sanctions committee’s panel of experts’ interim report which was circulated to the Council in late January. Following past practice Council members are expected to speak following the briefing.

The new panel of experts was appointed in November 2010. Resolution 1929 which established the panel for one year and imposed further sanctions on Iran, called for the interim report to be produced ninety days after the Secretary-General’s appointment of the panel.

While Council members appear supportive of the work of the panel of experts, there are some who are concerned about the effectiveness of the sanctions as they have not prompted Iran to engage in substantive negotiations.
