Insights on Counter-Terrorism: Progress in the 1540 Committee

Council members at expert level are working on completing the report of the 1540 Committee on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism. (Resolution 1540, adopted in 2004, established this Committee to address concerns that non-state actors might use weapons of mass destruction for terrorist purposes.) The Committee received the report of its panel of experts in late January and following a thorough review of this report members appear ready to finalise their report which is due to the Council by 24 April.

Later this month the Council is expected to renew the mandate of the Committee before it expires on 25 April. A resolution renewing the Committee’s mandate has been circulated to Council members and negotiations are expected to start next week.
