Insights on UNAMI

On Friday, 8 April the Council will be briefed by the Special Representative Ad Melkert and will hold informal consultations on Iraq. Melkert is expected to highlight key points from his report on the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI), which was published on 31 March, including recent political and regional developments. Another area that is expected to be of interest to Council members is progress on issues related to Kuwait including missing persons, archives, compensation and border demarcation.

This is the first time the Council will be discussing UNAMI since the high-level meeting in December 2010. At that meeting the Council made a number of decisions which are seen as important steps toward normalising Iraq’s international standing. However, progress in implementing some of these decisions has been slow on issues related to Kuwait and the successful transition to a DFI-successor mechanism and ratification of the IAEA Additional Protocol. While no outcome is expected from tomorrow’s meeting it remains to be seen if Council members are ready to give substance to the feeling that they should assess progress on these issues more closely over 2011.
