Insights on Yemen
On Wednesday, 20 April Council members were briefed by Gamal bin Omer, the UN envoy to Yemen. Bin Omar visited Yemen last week where he met President Ali Abdullah Saleh .
Germany and Lebanon proposed a presidential statement where Council members would express concern at the political crisis and call on the parties to exercise restraint and enter into comprehensive dialogue. The proposed statement also expressed support for the mediation role of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
However Council members were unable to agree on the presidential statement on Wednesday as China and Russia indicated that they needed feedback from their capitals on the statement.
Council members met (at the expert level) yesterday morning for another discussion on the statement.
