Briefing on Sudan

The briefing on Sudan by peacekeeping head Alain Le Roy, which was postponed twice since Friday, is scheduled to take place today (15 June) at 3 pm. It is also possible that UN Special Envoy, Haile Menkerios, and former South African President, Thabo Mbeki who have been involved in the talks between north Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir and south Sudan’s President Salva Kiir will also brief if they have access to video-teleconference facilities.

It seems that that the briefing will be in public with member states free to make statements. So far no member state has asked for consultations following the briefing.

Council members expect to hear details of any agreement that may have been reached by the parties. There is no planned outcome from the meeting and it is unclear if Council members are ready to take the next step of trying to take steps to implement the agreement.

Separately, the Secretary-General wrote to Council members today informing them of his intention to appoint Hilde Johnson as his Special Representative in South Sudan.
