Briefing on Myanmar

On Monday (14 November) Council members will be updated on developments in Myanmar by Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for Myanmar, Vijay Nambiar, who visited Myanmar from 31 October – 4 November. (It was Nambiar’s third visit since last year’s elections and his second since the establishment of a new government in Myanmar seven months ago.)

Council members appear interested in hearing about Nambiar’s discussions with government officials and Aung San Suu Kyi. (Nambiar met several high-ranking government officials on his recent visit, including Vice-President U Tin Aung Myint Oo, the Minister for Foreign Affairs U Wunna Maung Lwin, as well as with representatives from opposition parties and civil society.)

Nambiar is also likely to update Council members on any progress made in advancing national dialogue and reconciliation as well as the on-going dialogue between the government and Aung San Suu Kyi. It seems the briefing may also address the issue of the remaining political prisoners.

This briefing comes as the Secretary-General prepares to meet President Thein Sein on the margins of the fourth ASEAN-UN Summit in Bali on 19 November.
