Insights on the Cambodian-Thai Border Situation

This afternoon Council members will be briefed by the Brazilian permanent representative in her capacity as Council president on her phone conversation with the Indonesian foreign minister, Marty Natalegawa, following his mediation efforts with Cambodia and Thailand over the last two days. Based on the information received from Natalegawa, Council members will decide whether or not there should be further discussion on this issue.

There has been no decision on the format of a possible meeting although some members appear interested in having a formal meeting which would mean that this issue would be placed on the Council’s formal agenda.

It is also unclear who would brief the Council on this situation. It is likely that a representative from DPA would provide the Secretariat’s perspective while the two sides could be represented by their permanent respresentatives in New York. The Cambodian deputy prime minister has also indicated his interest in coming to New York.
