Insights on the Sudan Sanctions Committee

Tomorrow, the chair of the 1591 Sanctions Committee, Colombian Ambassador Nestor Osorio, will brief the Council on the work of the Committee during the last ninety days. He is expected to report that all five members of the panel of experts have been appointed and that the Committee met with four of the five experts on 23 February. (At that point the fifth expert had been identified but not yet appointed.)

In a related development it appears that the final report of the Sudan panel of experts which had been delayed by China since late November is likely to be released this month during China’s presidency. The report had been submitted to the Committee in October 2010 in accordance with its mandate and then conveyed to the Council in late November by the Committee but due to China’s objections could not be published.
