Insights on Haiti

Council members have in recent days been working on a possible press statement in which the Council would commend Haitians on the successful completion of the recent elections. The goal had been to release it following the announcement of the official results of the legislative election. It seems, however, that the recent allegations of irregularities in these elections have made Council members wary of making any comment at this stage.

Council members had been following the presidential and legislative election cycle in Haiti closely over the past months, as reflected in the presidential statement issued at the open debate on Haiti on 6 April which welcomed the ongoing electoral process. But in current circumstances it seems that members prefer to defer to regional groups, such as the Organisation of American States.
