Briefing on the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy (UNRCCA)

On Friday ( 15 July) Council members are expecting a briefing in consultations from the special representative of the Secretary-General and head of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA), Miroslav Jenča. This will be the sixth bi-annual briefing since the establishment of UNRCCA in December 2007. The briefings are intended to provide Council members with an update on the, Centre’s activities in the past six months and on developments in the region. (UNRCCA is based in in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.)

The most recent briefing on 13 January, focused on the situation in Kyrgyzstan where ethnic tensions and political uncertainties caused much concern in the region in 2010. At the upcoming briefing the Council is likely to be updated on developments in Kyrgyzstan and the work of UNRCCA there in the past six months. Also likely to be covered in the briefing are UNRCCA’s activities in its priority areas of combating cross-border threats from illicit activities such as terrorism, organised crime and drug trafficking and preventing environmental degradation and management of common resources such as water and energy. The briefings also present a good opportunity for Council members to explore the thematic issue of conflict prevention in its application in Central Asia and to discuss the general security situation including possible instability stemming from the situation in neighbouring Afghanistan
