    In early January the Council is expected to consider a report of the Secretary-General on Nepal and to review progress made on the September agreement between the government of Nepal and the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M). The report is also expected to contain details of the arrangements being made for the post-UNMIN period.

    Council members are expecting in October a briefing in closed consultations from Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs B. Lynn Pascoe following his visit to Nepal as called for in resolution 1939 in September. (The visit is expected to take place in the first half of October to focus on the implementation of the agreement reached by parties to complete the final tasks of the peace process by 14 January 2011.)

    The Council is to act on the future of UNMIN before its mandate expires on 15 September. Over the last week the Council received two letters with different requests on UNMIN’s mandate renewal—one from the Nepalese government and the other from the UCPN-Maoist party.

    The mandate of the mission in Nepal, UNMIN, expires on 15 September. Karin Landgren, UNMIN’s head, is expected to brief the Council in early September. Among the areas likely to be covered in the briefing are the political stalemate in Nepal following the resignation of Madhav Nepal as prime minister on 30 June, developments in integration of the Maoists ex-combatants and impact of these developments on UNMIN’s ability to carry out its mandate.

    In May the Council is expected to discuss the Secretary-General’s report on resolution 1909 that renewed the mandate of UNMIN until 15 May. In it the Council called for UNMIN to make the “necessary arrangements…for its withdrawal, including handing over any residual monitoring responsibilities”. The head of UNMIN, Karin Landgren is likely to brief the Council.

    In mid-January the Council is expected to receive a briefing from Karin Landgren, the Secretary-General’s Representative and head of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN). It will also discuss the future of UNMIN, whose mandate expires on 23 January. The Secretary-General’s report is due 11 January.

    In early November the Council is expected to discuss the Secretary-General’s latest report on the implementation of resolution 1879 and the progress in creating the conditions to complete the mandate of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN). Resolution 1879 also extended UNMIN’s mandate till 23 January 2010.

    In July the Council is expected to consider the future of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN). Its mandate expires on 23 July. The Secretary-General’s report is likely to contain an analysis of the implications of developments for the future of the peace process and UNMIN’s role.

    The Council is expecting the Secretary-General’s report on progress towards a “phased gradual drawdown and withdrawal of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) staff, including arms monitors.” In January the Council extended UNMIN’s mandate until 23 July.

    In January the Council is expected to consider the future of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN). Its mandate expires on 23 January. UNMIN was set up in January 2007, initially for one year. It has had two six-month extensions at the request of the Nepalese government.

    On 7 November the Council is expecting a briefing by the Secretary-General on his trip to Nepal (which at press time was scheduled for 31 October to 1 November). Special Representative in Nepal, Ian Martin, will also present the recent report on the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), discussion of which was previously planned for October.

    In July the Secretary General’s Special Representative for Nepal, Ian Martin will brief the Council on the Secretary General’s latest report on the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) and the future of the mission. UNMIN’s mandate expires on 23 July. At the time of writing, the UN had not received any request from Nepal regarding UNMIN’s future role.
